Central Coast was the second largest California coastal appellation to be approved by the BATF. This exciting appellation spans from Santa Barbara to San Francisco. With nearly 100,000 acres under vine (the most territory under vine), it is characterized by the cooling influence of the Pacific Ocean. Wineries in this appellation grow a diversity of grape varietals and range from small boutique wineries to large-scale producers. The Central Coast appellation includes numerous smaller AVAs within it's boundaries such as: Arroyo Grande Valley, Arroyo Seco, Carmel Valley, Chalone, Edna Valley, Livermore Valley, Santa Lucia Highlands, Santa Maria Valley, Santa Ynez Valley, Santa Rita Hills, Paso Robles and York Mountain. The most popular grape is Chardonnay but Pinot Noir is enjoying world-wide acclaim, especially in the Santa Rita Hills. In addition, Rhone varietals are emerging as a prominent portion of annual production with Paso Robles leading the charge.
